- Description: February averages $430 round trip from the US to Europe, against $668 in June. When to book it (about three months out), which day to fly, and when the cheapest month is the wrong one.

Off Peak is the franchise about when rather than where. This one is about the flight itself, and the question we get most: what is the cheapest time to fly to Europe from the US?

The data gives a clear answer, February, and a less obvious one about when to buy it. If you are reading this in early November, a February trip is sitting right in its cheapest booking window now.

**THE WINDOW:** FLY JANUARY TO FEBRUARY FOR THE LOWEST FARES. BOOK ABOUT THREE MONTHS OUT, LEAVE MIDWEEK. FOR THE BEST TRIP RATHER THAN THE CHEAPEST TICKET, LOOK AT MARCH TO APRIL OR OCTOBER TO NOVEMBER.

Flights to Europe are cheapest ~~if you book as early as you can~~ if you fly in February and book about three months out

## The cheapest time to fly to Europe: February

![Average round trip from the US to Europe on KAYAK: February 430 dollars, May 597 dollars, June 668 dollars](https://storage.ghost.io/c/9e/ef/9eef1d65-d19b-4f3e-9e0c-9c74dac0fa53/content/images/2026/10/eu-months.png)

KAYAK's route data puts February as the cheapest month to fly from the US to Europe, at an average of $430 round trip. The most expensive months are June, at $668, and May, at $597\. In other words, the same seat costs roughly half again as much in June as in February.

Deal trackers see the same shape from a different angle. Going, which sends cheap fare alerts, says it finds the most Europe deals for travel in January and the fewest for June. The whole winter stretch behaves this way: once the holiday weeks are over, airlines are filling planes that business travelers and students are not.

The holidays are the exception. Christmas and New Year sit inside winter but price like peak season, which is why we covered the [Christmas market window](https://crosscheck.blog/best-time-european-christmas-markets/) separately.

## When to book: about three months out

![Booking window for US to Europe: start watching four months out; about 94 days out is the typical low; the historical low range ends about seven weeks out; last minute is usually the most expensive](https://storage.ghost.io/c/9e/ef/9eef1d65-d19b-4f3e-9e0c-9c74dac0fa53/content/images/2026/10/eu-clock.png)

This is where the advice you have heard is most often wrong. Booking as early as possible does not reliably get you the lowest price. Google's analysis of its own Flights data found that trips from the US to Europe tend to be cheapest about 94 days before departure, with the historical low range running until roughly 50 days out. Going recommends a broad window of 2 to 8 months for off-season international trips, and says shoulder-season Europe fares can stay low until 2 to 4 months before departure.

The sources do not agree to the day, and they never will, because airlines price each route and date on its own. They do agree on the shape: not a year out, not the last two weeks. For a February trip, that means watching now and booking in November or early December.

Two habits make this easier. Set a Google Flights price alert for your dates, so the timing comes to you. And remember that on a standard fare, a [price drop after you book](https://crosscheck.blog/flight-price-drop-after-booking/) can still be claimed back as credit, so buying a good fare early is rarely a mistake.

## Which day to fly

Midweek departures win. KAYAK lists Wednesday as the cheapest day to fly to Europe and Saturday as the most expensive, a gap of about 8 percent on its figures. Google found flights leaving Monday to Wednesday averaged 13 percent less than those leaving Friday to Sunday. The day you book matters far less than the day you fly, which is the same conclusion we reached on the [Tuesday booking myth](https://crosscheck.blog/edition-2/).

## Why the cheapest month is not always the best trip

![January to February: lowest fares and cheapest hotels, but short days, cold and some closures. March to April and October to November: about 27 percent under peak fares with longer days and smaller crowds. June to August: highest fares and biggest crowds](https://storage.ghost.io/c/9e/ef/9eef1d65-d19b-4f3e-9e0c-9c74dac0fa53/content/images/2026/10/eu-value.png)

February is the cheapest month to be in the air. It is not automatically the best month to be in Europe. Northern cities get short days and real cold, and much of the Mediterranean, especially the Greek islands, scales back hotels and ferries until spring. For a city break in Prague, Vienna, Paris or Lisbon, winter works well: hotels are cheaper too, and the big sights are calm. For a beach or island trip, it does not.

The shoulder months are the compromise. KAYAK's search data found flights in Europe's in-between months, March, April, October and November, running up to 27 percent below peak-season fares. Our own [Lisbon check](https://crosscheck.blog/best-time-to-visit-lisbon/) found early October about a quarter cheaper than August, with weather most people would choose over it.

## The playbook

**Want the lowest fare?** Fly in January or February, avoiding the holiday weeks. Pick a city, not a beach.

**Want the best trip for the money?** Fly in March to April or October to November.

**Book about three months out.** Start watching around four months before, and try not to be still shopping inside seven weeks.

**Leave midweek** and return midweek if you can.

**Only booking summer?** Then the long lead time matters. Going says summer Europe fares often hit their lows 4 to 10 months out, so a June trip is worth pricing from winter.

**Bottom line:** the cheapest time to fly to Europe is February, booked about three months ahead and leaving midweek. If you can go this winter, now is the time to book it. If you would rather have longer days, the shoulder months cost a little more and give you a lot more trip.

## How we checked this

Verified October 2026 against: KAYAK's United States to Europe route page for average round trip prices by month, cheapest and most expensive day, and seasonality; KAYAK's in-between seasons guide, based on its US search data for 2019 to 2022, for shoulder-season savings; Google's published analysis of Google Flights booking data, as reported by Thrifty Traveler, for the 94 day booking point, the 50 day low range and the 13 percent midweek saving; and Going's guides to cheap flights to Europe and to booking with Google Flights, both 2026, for deal frequency by month and booking windows by season. These are averages across many routes and dates. Your route will vary, and the prices quoted are averages from search data, not fares you can book today.
