Which makes Paros an awkward debut, because six weeks ago this site CLEARED Santorini. Every other publication runs the same headline, skip Santorini, go to Paros, and we are not going to pretend a verdict we published in July stopped being true in September.
The usual advice: skip Santorini, go to Paros instead base in Paros, visit Santorini. The ferry is two hours.
The money
Paros runs 30 to 50 percent below Santorini on comparable accommodation. Guesthouse rooms start around 40 to 95 dollars; sit-down meals in the old town run 15 to 25. Santorini's caldera-view hotels in summer clear several hundred a night, and our own July audit found five-star caldera properties discounted to around 500 euros, which was the news precisely because it was low.
The pattern holds on everything downstream: transport, tavernas, beach clubs. Paros is not cheap in absolute terms. It is meaningfully cheaper for the same week.
What you actually give up
Nothing about Paros replaces the caldera. There is no volcanic crater, no cliff-edge sunset over a flooded caldera, no Oia. If that specific image is why you are going to Greece, Paros will not deliver it, and any article implying otherwise is selling you a substitute for something that has no substitute.
What Paros has instead: Naoussa, a working fishing harbour that turns cosmopolitan after dark, with tables at the water's edge under Venetian castle ruins. Parikia, the port town, with a maze-like old market and Panagia Ekatontapiliani, one of the oldest churches in Greece. Kolymbithres and its sculpted granite. Lefkes, marble-paved and quiet. Piso Livadi if you want a fishing port and no nightclubs.
It is a bigger, more varied island: 196 square kilometres, about 12,500 residents, 40 to 45 minutes to drive end to end. You can have a beach day, a hiking day and a nightlife night without repeating yourself.
The ferry math, which is the whole argument
Santorini to Paros is 2 to 3 hours by ferry. Golden Star runs it daily at roughly 52 to 53 euros, about 2 hours 10 minutes. Seajets adds sailings twice a week.
That number is why the swap is not a swap. Two hours and fifty euros is a day trip, not a border crossing. Base yourself in Paros for four or five nights at Paros prices, take the ferry across for two or three nights in Santorini for the caldera and the sunset, and you have paid Paros rates for most of your trip while still seeing the thing Santorini is famous for.
The failure mode this avoids has a name among people who plan these trips: Santorini fatigue, the point around night five when you have seen the caldera, you are still paying caldera prices, and the queues have stopped being charming.
Getting there
From Athens (Piraeus), Paros is 3 to 4.5 hours by high-speed ferry, roughly 30 to 60 euros. Rafina is about 30 minutes by taxi from the airport if you would rather sail from there. Paros is also one of the best-connected islands in the Cyclades: Naxos is 30 minutes, Mykonos about 1.5 hours.
Book summer ferries at least two weeks ahead. This is the single most common way people lose money on this itinerary, because walk-up high-season tickets on the popular sailings simply are not there.
The honest verdict
If your budget is fixed and your priority is time in Greece rather than one specific view, Paros is the better base and the swap is worth real money. If you have five nights and the caldera is the entire point, stay in Santorini and skip the ferry.
What we will not tell you is that Paros is Santorini for less. It is a different island that happens to sit two hours away from the one you already wanted to see.
